Apply, Cover, Reapply

An ordered procedure: measure the dose, spread it over every exposed area, note the time, and renew the film every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Step 1: measure 2 mg/cm². In volume terms that is a tablespoon, 25 ml, for each area — a tablespoon for each limb, a tablespoon for the face, a tablespoon for the chest and a tablespoon for the back. The dose is what the SPF number was measured at, so estimating by eye puts the labelled figure out of reach.

Step 2: spread the product evenly over every area that will be exposed. Uneven application leaves thin patches where the fraction of burning radiation that gets through rises above the labelled SPF; the film has to be continuous for the number to describe it.

Step 3: note the time of application. The reapplication interval is counted from the moment the film went on, not from the moment of first sun exposure, so a reminder set at application is what keeps the interval honest.

Step 4: reapply about every two hours. Higher-SPF products do not stay effective longer and must be reapplied, usually every two hours — the interval is the same at SPF 15 and at SPF 50.

Step 5: cover the areas again after swimming or sweating. Water and friction remove the film sooner than the two-hour mark, so those events restart the application regardless of how much time has passed.

The failure mode to watch for is trusting a high SPF number for longer protection. The label describes throughput at 2 mg/cm²; it says nothing about how long the film lasts, and a higher number does not extend the two-hour interval.

  • Measure 2 mg/cm² — a tablespoon (25 ml) per area.
  • Spread evenly over every area that will be exposed.
  • Note the time of application.
  • Reapply about every two hours.
  • Reapply after swimming or sweating.
  • Failure mode: trusting a high SPF number for longer protection.
